When the .NET generic domain name extension was initially introduced in 1985, along with the first domain extensions on the World Wide Web, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure organizations. Given that there were no special prerequisites about the usage of the top-level domain, though, dot NET domains were reserved and used for different purposes and by quite a few people. This extension is a good alternative to dot COM, especially if the wanted domain with the latter TLD is not free for registration.
